ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Virginia Techs Zach LeDay started the second half with a thunderous one-handed dunk punctuated by a high-stepping celebration against Nebraska. His teammates fed off that dunk and several other LeDay slams as he scored 19 points and added nine rebounds to lead Virginia Tech to a 66-53 victory over Nebraska in the third-place game of the Wooden Legacy on Sunday.Virginia Tech (5-1) wowed offensively in the second half and made its final six free throws over the last 55 seconds to secure the win after trailing by eight points in the first half. The second half was all Hokies.Coach told us we were playing really good defense and that shots were going to fall, LeDay said. We couldnt be offensive sensitive. Were not built to be offensive sensitive. Were built for games like that. Its a fistfight. Youve got to get rebounds and get in there. ... We wanted to come out in the second half and punch them in the mouth and in the second half make all the little plays.Nebraska (4-2) didnt have an answer for the Hokies inside. Guard Tai Webster led Nebraska with 23 points and added eight rebounds, but the rest of his teammates had 30 points combined.LeDay, a senior forward, came off the bench and had his way inside. He was the focal point of the offense.I think its fun to watch. I think he plays with an edge, Virginia Tech coach Buzz Williams said of LeDay. One thing I would say thats hard to quantify is that I think those guys care about one another. You can see as we were struggling in the first half that they were looking to throw the ball to Zach. That didnt discontinue in the second half when we began to make more shots.Virginia Tech shot just 29.6 percent from the field in the first half but found its shooting rhythm in the second half, making 56.5 percent (13 of 23) of its shots.BIG PICTUREVirginia Tech lost its first game of the season to Texas A&M in the semifinals of the tournament but responded by beating the Cornhuskers and playing well with lead down the stretch.Nebraska played well in the Wooden Legacy, even in an 82-71 loss to UCLA in the semifinals -- its first loss of the season. The Cornhuskers return home having been battle tested against two solid teams and can learn much from film of those games.QUOTE OF THE GAMEMost of the Nebraska players went to Disneyland on Saturday, which was an off day for the tournament. Coach Tim Miles was not among those at the happiest place on earth.I was mad about losing to UCLA, so I didnt go, Miles said. My son came (back) and told me he went on a lot of attractions. I said I only went on two, my bed and the toilet.QUOTE OF THE GAME PART TWOVirginia Tech had a difficult time in the offensive zone as it plodded along and missed 19 of 27 shots.Zach knows what it is because were from the same place. Its like a tractor pull, Williams said. None of its fun. Its just a bunch of country people on a Saturday night and thats their entertainment. Thats what it looked like. We shot (29.6) percent. They shot (38.5) percent. Thats not fun as a fan. Its not fun for anybody, I wouldnt think.UP NEXTVirginia Tech returns home for a brief stay, then is off to play at No. 25 Michigan on Wednesday. Home cooking is up after that, as the Hokies play six consecutive games at Cassell Coliseum and dont play on the road again until 2017.Nebraska travels to Clemson on Wednesday, followed by home games against South Dakota and a stiff test against No. 12 Creighton. Richard Jersey .J. -- New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz will miss the rest of the season after having surgery on his left knee. MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Twins have placed third baseman Trevor Plouffe on the disabled list due to a broken left rib that will likely keep him out at least a month.Plouffe was hit by a pitch Wednesday at Chicago and played the next two games, even going 3 for 4 with a home run Friday against Texas. The pain flared up over the weekend, though, and he was scratched from the lineup Sunday. The move was made Monday before the Twins hosted Oakland, and first baseman Kennys Vargas was recalled from Triple-A Rochester to fill in.Another tough blow for Trevor, manager Paul Molitor said. Hes had a frustrating year in terms of getting hurt, getting healthy, getting hurt.Plouffe had a DL stint earlier this season for a strained muscle on his right side. He missed two games last week because of a strained right groin muscle.Just kind of battling throughout the year, playing at 65 to 70 percent, just trying to get through it, Plouffe said. And I would love to continue to do that, man, but this is a little bit too much.Plouffe was told hell probably need four weeks before he can swing again.I feel like I could probably beat that, Plouffe said. I typically come back quicker than they preedict, so well see.ddddddddddddAt least the rest of his body ought to be able to fully heal while hes resting the rib.Got to find a silver lining, man, he said. The silver lining for the Twins is making it easy for Molitor to put Miguel Sano at third base every day, rather than move him to designated hitter when Plouffe was in the field. Vargas, who hit .235 with 14 home runs and 53 RBI in 82 games for the Red Wings, will see some action at DH in the meantime. The Twins kept the arbitration-eligible Plouffe for $7.25 million, after he batted .244 with 22 home runs, 35 doubles and a career-high 86 RBI last season. That prompted them to play Sano out of position in right field, an experiment that recently ended when he returned from the DL.Given their majors-worst 27-54 record at the 81-game midpoint of the schedule, the Twins are certain to try to trade some of their veterans this month before the non-waiver deadline. The injury to Plouffe has reduced his value, though.I dont know whats going to happen with that now, Plouffe said. I guess I never knew. ' ' '
