England can make it to the semi-finals of Euro 2016 if they gain the right momentum, says former caretaker manager Peter Taylor. Roy Hodgsons men narrowly beat Portugal in a fairly drab affair at Wembley, with Chris Smallings header sealing the 1-0 win as the visitors played just under an hour with ten men after Bruno Alves red card. But Taylor remained upbeat about Englands chances in the upcoming tournament in France, where they play Russia on June 11 in Group B. I think were a good team. Its all about that first match. If we can win our first match and build momentum we can go from there, Taylor said after commentating on the game for Sky Sports News HQ. Chris Smalling scored the only goal as England beat Portugal 1-0 at Wembley I think we can go a long, long way - and Im talking about the semi-finals. And once you get to the semi-finals anything can happen because youre a confident bunch. The nice thing about England is theyve got a good habit of winning matches. They havent played great tonight but theyve won a match again, from a good goal, and there was still some good things. And it doesnt look like there were any injuries - so thats another positive.Hodgson has experimented with formations in the warm-up games, and played the majority of the Wembley match-up with a diamond formation before switching to a 4-3-3 late on. Dele Alli can play anywhere in Englands diamond formation, says Taylor Despite a lacklusture performance, Taylor thought the formation worked on the night and has identified the players he believes are certain to start in France.I thought the formation was good. It was a diamond shape but the difference is [Eric] Dier goes in between the centre-backs, the full-backs push on and its a 3-5-2, which gives us two targets for the strikers and gives us great width, which helps. Dele Alli can play anywhere, top of the diamond, to the left, to the right, even alongside Dier as he did at the start of the season with Tottenham. Allis a cert, [Harry] Kanes a cert, [Wayne] Rooneys a cert - Im not sure [Jamie] Vardy is a cert at the moment. Taylor believes England captain Wayne Rooney is a certainty to start at Euro 2016 The things that are going to make Roy really think are Wilshere looked nice and fit when he came on, started beating people again. We have another nine days and I think he may try to get Wilshere into the team. Maybe Henderson for Milner if he doesnt go the Wilshere route. It wouldnt surprise me if that was Hodgsons back four. A lot of our defending started from the front and I think that affected our performance - Kane works hard getting back, Vardy works hard, we then get the ball and have no targets. It still makes us solid and they didnt test us much. Also See: England edge final friendly As it happened Quinton McCracken Jersey . CARSON, Calif. -- It was an eventful year for the U.S. womens national team off the field, with Hope Solos suspension after the Rio Olympics, lawsuits over the expiring collective bargaining agreement and Megan Rapinoes protest during the national anthem dominating the headlines. But in their final match of the year, the Americans offered a summary of how things played out on the field in equal parts fulfillment and disappointment, with Crystal Dunn, Christen Press, Morgan Brian and Samantha Mewis scoring to help the U.S. beat Romania 5-0 on Sunday night at the StubHub Center. The U.S. blistered Romania with 31 shots and did not allow a shot, but U.S. coach Jill Ellis was not happy with the teams wastefulness.I think we left a lot to be said, Ellis said. The same could be said of a year in which the Americans went 22-0-3 in regulation play, scoring 92 goals and conceding 10, but failed to defend their Olympic gold medal after losing to Sweden on penalty kicks in the quarterfinals. Still, the U.S. ended on a largely positive note.I think we all reacted well to it and 2017 is going to be an intense year, Dunn said.An own goal in the 20th minute opened the sccoring for the U.ddddddddddddS. when Dunns cross was chested into the net by Teodora Meluta. Dunn scored her 14th goal this year in the first minute of first-half stoppage time, sprinting past two defenders to take a pass from Press and put a shot between Roxana Opreas legs.Press made it 3-0 in the 55th minute, connecting with Tobin Heath on a give-and-go and scoring for the fourth consecutive game. Press had a hat trick Thursday night in San Jose in the Americans 8-1 victory over Romania.Brian scored on a penalty kick in the 88th minute and Mewis added a goal in the first minute of additional time.Rapinoe wasnt included on the U.S. roster for the second consecutive match.Ellis is planning to hold camps for the national team and the Under-23s in January, operating on the assumption that they will be conducted under the current contractual structure. But Ellis did not know the status of negotiations between players and U.S. Soccer.I dont get involved in that, Ellis said. Thats between them and lawyers and all that good stuff. ' ' '
