(SportsNetwork.com) - The Carolina Hurricanes will try to salvage the finale of a five-game homestand on Monday night as they take on the struggling New Jersey Devils. The Hurricanes have lost two straight and three of four on this residency, including a 3-1 setback to the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday. Cam Ward came up with 19 saves in his clubs sixth loss in eight games overall. Jay McClement netted his first goal of the season in the loss as Carolina fell to 5-6-1 as the hosting team this season. It was starting to wear on me a little bit, so its nice to get it out of the way, but more importantly, we just didnt do the things we needed to do to get the win tonight. That would have been a little sweeter, said McClement. Making matters worse for the Hurricanes is that forward Eric Staal was hit on the foot by a slap shot from teammate Justin Faulk late in the third period. His status for this game is unknown. Staal is tied with Riley Nash and Faulk for the team lead with 15 points. Ward had missed Carolinas previous game with a lower-body injury, so backup Anton Khudobin figures to get the start tonight as the Canes play on consecutive days. He is 1-1-0 with a 3.96 goals against average and .861 save percentage in three meetings with the Devils. Slumping New Jersey has lost eight of 10 and fell to 4-10-2 in its past 16 with a 4-1 setback to the Washington Capitals on Saturday. Patrik Elias had the goal and Cory Schneider allowed three tallies on 28 shots faced. Elias was returning from a groin injury and aggravated the ailment, while forward Mike Cammalleri suffered a pulled muscle in his butt. Neither made the trip to Carolina, nor did Travis Zajac (lower body/illness) or Adam Larsson (flu). Its disappointing we werent the better team, Devils coach Peter DeBoer said after the loss to the Caps. They were better on the power play than we were. They were better on the penalty kill than we were. Their goalie was better than our goalie. It was across the board. Injuries really dont matter. Nobody cares. You have to find a way. While the Devils are leaving a host of players behind, forward Martin Havlat did make the trip. He has missed the past three games with a lower-body injury and is questionable for tonight. Havlat has two goals and six points in 14 games on the season. The Devils return home to host the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday, so it is unknown if Schneider will start tonight or if backup Scott Clemmensen will get a start. Schneider, who has started all but one of New Jerseys 27 games this season, is 3-1-0 with a 2.01 GAA and .933 save percentage in four meetings with the Hurricanes. Clemmensen is 3-6-0 against them with a 3.07 GAA and .896 save percentage in 12 games (7 starts). The Devils have won three straight and 10 of their last 14 versus the Hurricanes, including three in a row as the road team. PITTSBURGH -- Pirates catcher Russell Martin didnt start Thursdays game. Rather, he ended it. Martin drew a bases-loaded walk off Tony Cingrani with two outs in the 12th inning and Pittsburgh beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-3 to avoid a three-game sweep. Cingranis first pitch buzzed in low around the ankles of Martin, who drew boos from those left in attendance for not letting the ball hit him to score the winning run. "I did wonder maybe if I wouldve got hit the game would be over," Martin said. "But when its at your feet you just react, and I just reacted." Later, Cingranis 3-1 pitch caught what Reds manager Bryan Price thought was a part of the strike zone established during the games proceedings. Instead, it was ball four. "Im not saying we would have won this game," Price said. "But it certainly didnt give us an opportunity to go out there and compete in the 13th." Cingrani (2-8) took the loss after he gave up a single to Gaby Sanchez, balked him to second, intentionally walked Josh Harrison and hit Clint Barmes with a pitch to load the bases. Martin entered the game in the 10th and wound up walking twice. Justin Wilson (2-0) retired the Reds in order in the top of the 12th. Devin Mesoraco hit a solo homer in the Reds ninth off Jason Grilli, who blew his fourth save in 15 chances this season. Grilli gave up a home run for the second time in three days, and has allowed four in 20 games this year. He gave up four homers in 54 appearances last season. Billy Hamilton led off the game with a double against Jeff Locke, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Joey Votto to put the Reds ahead 1-0. Votto doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jay Bruce for a 2-0 lead in the fourth. Locke settled down though and worked six innings in which he allowed two runs on six hits and a walk. Gregory Polanco opened the fourth with a single for Pittsburghs first runner against Homer Baileey and the Pirates later scored three times in the fifth.dddddddddddd. With runners at the corners and Polanco at the plate, Bailey went through his pitching motion but did not release the ball and was called for a balk. ""It was one of those deals where youre thinking more about not falling than throwing the ball," Bailey said. "My back foot slipped out from me then I land on the side of my other the foot, so it was a circus all the way around. I was just trying not to fall backward." Pirates manager Clint Hurdle offered that the call may have helped his hitters gain some traction against Bailey after he started with three perfect frames. "I think that the balk call might have leaked in a little bit," Hurdle said. "Whether it rattled him, I dont know, hes a pro." Polanco, Starling Marte and Andrew McCutchen followed with singles that scored two runs for a 3-2 Pittsburgh lead. "They hit some balls off the end of the bat, had some balls fall in," Bailey said. Price pulled Bailey in the sixth and as reliever Sam LeCure took his warmup pitches, heavy rain began to fall and there was a 35-minute delay. The Pirates twice put runners in scoring position after Mesoracos tying homer. McCutchen struck out looking at an offspeed offering from Aroldis Chapman in the ninth with runners at first and second. Marte struck out swinging in the 11th in the same situation.
