Twenty-six years ago this week -- the exact date was July 11, 1990 -- the Chicago White Sox tried something a little daring for their game against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Sox dressed in uniforms based on the teams 1917 unis.Going along with the old-school vibe, general admission tickets were 50 cents and popcorn was sold for a nickel. Comiskey Parks public address system was shut down for the day, and lineups were announced via a megaphone. Most of the advertisements in the ballpark were covered up. Men dressed in straw hats and bow ties, and women in long skirts and bonnets. There was a barbershop quartet, a hand-operated scoreboard, and an organ-grinder with a monkey.A note in the scorecard explained what was going on. Welcome to Turn Back the Clock Day at Comiskey Park, it began. To help savor the final season at historic Comiskey, the White Sox want you to be able to look at the field, squint, and perhaps capture the flavor of what it was like here in 1917, the last year the Sox were World Champions. To help you imagine, the team will appear in 1917 replica uniforms made of current cloth but made along the lines of bygone days. And so began the first attempt at what has now become a common promotion in the sports world: the throwback game. Teams typically no longer bother with most of the nostalgic trappings (tough break for the organ-grinder industry), but the key component -- the use of throwback uniforms -- has remained. Throwbacks have become so firmly established in the uni-verse, and are such reliable crowd-pleasers, that its easy to forget how revolutionary they once seemed, especially on that day in Chicago in 1990.Steve Winkler, a lifelong Chicagoan who works for the Cook County Clerks office, was one of the 40,666 fans who attended that game. He was 24 years old at the time and remembers it very clearly.I was coaching Little League, and I took about 10 or 15 kids and adults to the game with me, because the ticket prices were so low, he said. The uniforms were terrific -- they were very authentic. Or as authentic as they could be. Of course, the kids didnt quite grasp the whole thing, so the adults were explaining everything to them.Michael James, a data analyst and Brewers fan from Milwaukee, drove down to Chicago that day with a friend. I thought the uniforms were a brilliant idea, James said. I was a little disappointed the Brewers didnt do something with their uniforms, but they were only a 20-year-old team at the time, so they didnt have much of a history to dip back into.Winkler and James both enjoy the feeling of having been in on the ground floor of the throwback revolution. Anytime someone does a throwback game, I think, Yeah, I was there for that first one, James said.(Winkler, though, takes a dim view of teams that trot out throwback uniforms but dont include all the retro-themed trimmings that the White Sox provided back in 1990. Amateurs, he sniffs.)It didnt take other sports long to be bitten by the throwback bug. Heres a look at the first throwback uniforms worn by the other major North American pro leagues, presented in the order in which they jumped aboard the throwback bandwagon:NHL: The NHL introduced throwbacks for its 1991-92 season, when the league was celebrating its 75th anniversary. The Original Six teams -- the Blackhawks, Bruins, Canadiens, Maple Leafs, Rangers and Red Wings -- all added throwback uniforms to their wardrobes that season.NFL: The first NFL team to turn back the clock was the 1993 Jets, who commemorated the 25th anniversary of their Super Bowl III-winning season by wearing a throwback uniform -- sort of. Instead of new white helmets, the Jets used their existing green helmet shells, adorned with a green version of their classic 1960s logo. The rest of the NFL took the throwback plunge the following season, as the league marked its 75th anniversary with a wide-ranging series of throwbacks.NBA: The NBA was the last of the major pro leagues to embrace the throwback trend, finally succumbing in 1996-97 as part of the leagues 50th anniversary.By now, the vast majority of major-level pro teams have worn throwbacks at some point. Three of them have even done so while competing for a championship. In 1994, the San Francisco 49ers were so successful while wearing their throwbacks during the regular season that they asked the NFL for permission to wear them during the postseason, which culminated in their victory over the San Diego Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX.In the 2003 NBA Finals, the New Jersey Nets revived their Dr. J-era throwbacks, although that move wasnt enough to keep them afloat against the San Antonio Spurs. And earlier this year, the Pittsburgh Penguins wore their throwbacks while defeating the San Jose Sharks in the Stanley Cup finals. And if a team hasnt existed long enough to have a throwback design, it can still play along by creating a fauxback, a move pioneered by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2012.Its appropriate that the White Sox were the ones to pioneer the throwback craze, because theyve had some pretty bizarre uniforms over the years, from their untucked leisure suits to their beach blanket design with the uni number on the leg and their reverse-field stirrups (a rare instance of the White Sox living up to their name!). After 26 years, theyve now tried throwback versions of many of those designs, but theres one Sox uni that Winkler would still like to see.The shorts, he says. Thats the one Im waiting for. ?Hes not the only one. Come on, Sox -- make it happen.(Special thanks to Mike Chamernik and Eric Pytel for their research assistance.)Would you like to nominate a uniform, uni element, or event to be showcased in a future Friday Flashback installment? Send your suggestions here.Paul Lukas wishes throwback games had existed when he was growing up in the 1970s. There are a handful of stadiums in Major League Baseballs modern era that were used for fewer seasons than Atlantas Turner Field, which has been home of the Braves since 1997.ONE SEASONSicks Stadium, Seattle (1969) -- A minor-league park that opened in 1938, it hosted the only season of the expansion Seattle Pilots, who moved to Milwaukee in 1970 and became the Brewers. Merely intended as a temporary home until a new domed stadium was built, Sicks Stadium was expanded to hold around 25,000 for the Pilots.Wrigley Field, Los Angeles (1961) -- Far less famous than its namesake stadium in Chicago, this was another minor-league park that was temporary home for the expansion Los Angeles Angels their first season. The Angels moved to Dodger Stadium the following year as tenants to the citys other major league team until Anaheim Stadium opened in 1966.TWO SEASONSMile High Stadium, Denver (1993-94) -- While this stadium became known mostly as home of the NFLs Denver Broncos, it did include a huge movable stand to accommodate baseball. It was used for the expansion Colorado Rockies first two seasons while Coors Field was under construction.Seals Stadium, San Francisco (1958-59) -- A longtime minor-league park that opened in 1931, it was pressed into service as stopgap home of the Giants after they moved from New York to the West Coast along with the Brooklyn Dodgers. It was expanded to about 23,000 seats and used until Candlestick Park opened in 1960.THREE SEASONSColt Stadium, Houston (1962-64) -- A hastily constructed, temporary facility for Houstons expansion team, originally known as the Colt .45s, while the worlds first domed stadium was constructed nearby. Known for its blistering heat and swarms of mosquitoes, it was demolished after the renamed Astros moved to the Astrodome.FOUR SEASONSLos Angeles Memorial Coliseum (1958-61) -- A football and athletics stadium that is still in use today, it was the temporary home of the Dodgers after their move from Brooklyn. It featured a left-field screen that was only 251 feet from home plate and hosted record crowds of more than 92,000 during the 1959 World Series.EIGHT SEASONSJarry Park Stadium, Montreal (1969-76) -- Another temporary facility that served as the first home of the Montreal Expos, who moved to Olympic Stadium the season after thee 1976 Summer Games.dddddddddddd A tiny baseball field in a public park was expanded to seat 28,000 and most notably had a swimming pool beyond the right-field wall.12-PLUS SEASONSExhibition Stadium, Toronto (1977-89) -- Originally built for the Canadian National Exhibition in 1948, the stadium was home of the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League from 1959-1988. An awkward expansion converted it to baseball when the Blue Jays arrived, but thousands of seats were far from home plate and faced away from the infield, and the weather could be downright brutal. The team moved to the nearby SkyDome during the 1989 season.13 SEASONSRFK Memorial Stadium, Washington (1962-71, 2005-07) -- The first of the circular, cookie-cutter stadiums designed as a multi-sport facility for both football and baseball. The second incarnation of the Washington Senators played there for 10 seasons before moving to Texas, and the Washington Nationals used it for three seasons after moving from Montreal until their new, baseball-only park was constructed. Best known as home of the NFLs Washington Redskins from 1961-96 and still host to an MLS soccer team, D.C. United.17 SEASONSMunicipal Stadium, Kansas City (1955-67, 1969-72) -- The only baseball-specific stadium to serve a shorter major league tenure than Turner Field, the Athletics played there from 1955-67 after leaving Philadelphia. When the As moved on to Oakland, the expansion Royals took their place after a one-year absence and stayed four seasons until Royals Stadium opened in 1973. A much longer baseball history overall than the Ted, it opened in 1923 as a minor-league park and also hosted a famed Negro League team, the Kansas City Monarchs. The AFL/NFLs Kansas City Chiefs called it home, as well, from 1963-71.19 SEASONSHard Rock Stadium, Miami (1993-2011) -- Known originally as Joe Robbie Stadium and built mainly for the NFLs Miami Dolphins, it was designed so minimal renovations would be needed for a conversion to baseball. The Marlins started in 1993, but the mammoth stadium proved to be a poor fit for baseball. The Marlins pressed for years to get a new park until a retractable-roof stadium opened in 2012renovations would be needed for a conversion t'
