CHICAGO -- Marian Hossa scored the lone goal in the shootout, and the banged-up Chicago Blackhawks stopped a three-game slide with a 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Thursday night. Chicago goaltender Corey Crawford made 25 saves through overtime, and then stopped all three Minnesota attempts in the shootout. Hossa connected on the Blackhawks second attempt in the tiebreaker by powering a shot through Ilya Bryzgalov. It was Chicagos first game since coach Joel Quenneville said captain Jonathan Toews would miss the rest of the regular season due to an upper-body injury. The Blackhawks also were without Patrick Kane, another star forward who is expected to miss the rest of the regular season because of a lower-body injury. Chicago did get Bryan Bickell back from an injury, and he scored a tiebreaking goal in the third period. Ben Smith also scored for the Blackhawks. Charlie Coyle and Erik Haula scored for Minnesota, which moved five points ahead of Dallas and Phoenix in the battle for two Western Conference wild-card playoff spots. Bryzgalov stopped 24 shots through overtime. Haula scored his fourth goal on a screened shot with 1:54 left, tying it at 2. He snapped off a shot from the right circle that sailed between the legs of Blackhawks defenceman Niklas Hjalmarsson and then deflected in off Crawfords glove. Coyle scored the only goal of the first on a quirky tip-in. Jared Spurgeon drifted in from the right point and fired. His shot hit Hjalmarssons stick, then deflected off the blade of Coyles stick and flipped over Crawfords glove at 14:19. Smith tied it at 2:29 of the second with his 11th goal. Bryzgalov stopped Nick Leddys low drive from the left point, and then got his left pad in front of Brandons Saad rebound attempt. Smith popped in the loose puck from a scrum in front. Zach Parise, who leads Minnesota with 28 goals, was hit hard from behind in open ice by Chicagos Brandon Bollig at 8:34 of the second period. After lying face down on the ice for a minute, he was helped to the dressing room by one of the Wild trainers, but returned later in the period. Minnesotas Kyle Brodziak broke in and deked Crawford to the ice with 1:15 left in the second, but fired wide. Bickell, who was sidelined for six games with an upper-body injury, beat Bryzgalov on a rebound of his initial point-blank attempt at 2:45 of the third period. But Haula sent the game to overtime, where the Wild outshot the Blackhawks 3-2 in a cautious period. Toews got hurt when he was drilled by Pittsburgh defenceman Brooks Orpik in the second period on Sunday. Kane was injured March 19 against St. Louis and has missed seven straight games. Quenneville has said both stars will be ready for the playoffs. NOTES: Blackhawks D Johnny Oduya was a last-minute scratch with a lower-body injury. ... Now the Royals will take the field on Saturday with a World Series lead for the first time in team history when they play Game 4 of the Fall Classic against the Giants at AT&T Park. OXNARD, Calif. -- The Dallas Cowboys are taking it easy with Tony Romos back. Romo was expected to sit out a competitive practice for the first time at training camp Tuesday, although coach Jason Garrett said it wasnt because of any setbacks from surgery for a herniated disk in late December. Garrett says the Cowboys are making daily decisions on workload, and Romo is in on them as well. Executive vice-president Stephen Jones said it was the 34-year-old quarterbacks idea to skip Fridays full practice, which was lighter work without pads. Romo did all the competitive work in the first two practices with pads Saturday and Sunday. The team was off Monday, and Romo was part of the morning walkthrough session earlier Tuesday. "Theres an old adage in football, a day off can be really valuable, two days off can be life changing," Garrett said. "So when you get in this kind of a situation, we had yesterday off, got some good work this morning in the walkthrough, some mental work of some of the different situations were working on." Romo injured his back against Washington last season but stayed in and threw a game-winning touchdown pass. He had surgery two days before the Cowboys lost to Philadelphia with Kyle Orton at quarterback in a season-ending loss that kept Dallas out of the playoffs. After being held out of competitive situations throughout the off-season, Romo was declared ready for camp.dddddddddddd But the Cowboys have been cautious by limiting his throws. Tuesdays break is the most significant cutback so far. "The biggest thing we talked to Tony about and really all of our players about, is honest feedback," Garrett said. "We recognize that youre a tough player. I saw what you did against the Redskins last year. You just got to tell us how youre doing, how its going and make sure we handle it the right way each and every day." Garrett said the feedback from Romo has been "good." "But we just have to monitor him," the coach said. "Weve just got to make sure we dont overdo the reps ... just be mindful of where he is each and every day." The surgery in December was the second procedure on Romos back in eight months. He had a cyst removed before the start of off-season practices last year and didnt do any significant work until training camp. This year, Romo tried to sneak into a competitive drill during minicamp in June, and Garrett kicked him out of the huddle. "Its the same approach we take here," Garrett said. "Lets keep taking incremental steps. Part of getting ready for that is practicing in training camp, part of getting ready for that is playing in preseason games. We feel like were very much on schedule in those two regards." ' ' '
